2025 Ford Police Interceptor Utility: Offering Both Hybrid and Ballistic Variants

The 2025 Ford Police Interceptor Utility (PIU) is making waves in the law enforcement community, as it rolls out with a host of innovative features designed to enhance safety and efficiency.

Produced by the American automobile manufacturer Ford, the new PIU is based on the 6th generation Explorer. Although the specific factory location in the United States is not explicitly stated, it is clear that the vehicle is made in the USA by Ford.

One of the standout features of the PIU is the standard Police Perimeter Alert system. This system detects moving threats around the vehicle, activating the rear camera, sounding a chime, rolling up windows, and locking the doors. Officers can adjust the sensitivity levels of the system for added control.

The PIU also comes with a standard hybrid powertrain option. The 3.3-liter direct-injected V6 with hybrid system provides 318 horsepower and 322 lb.-ft. of torque, offering a balance of power and efficiency. This hybrid powertrain can potentially save up to 838 gallons of fuel per year, making it an environmentally-friendly choice.

For high-performance situations, the Manual Police Pursuit Mode can be activated with a steering wheel button. This feature is designed for easier tuning during high-speed chases.

Departments have three powertrain options to choose from: the 3.3-liter direct-injected V6 with hybrid system (AWD), the 3.3L V6 gas engine (AWD), and the 3.0L V6 EcoBoost® engine (AWD). The latter provides a powerful 400 horsepower and 415 lbs. ft. of torque.

The PIU is equipped with the Police Engine Idle feature, allowing officers to lock the vehicle and take the keys with them, but keep the engine running to power the onboard equipment. This feature ensures that officers can leave the vehicle without worrying about the engine shutting off.

The new PIU also comes with a standard 12.3-inch LCD digital instrument cluster, providing clearer information display during operation. Additionally, it features the Ford Pro Vehicle Integration System 2.4.0 for easier customization, and advanced over-the-air capabilities for seamless updates.

For added safety, the PIU can have ballistic panels added to the front door panels, providing level III+ or IV+ protection. The PIU also boasts a Police Dark Car feature for discrete operation during stakeout.

With the current gas price at $3.50 per gallon, the hybrid powertrain in the PIU can result in projected cost reductions of approximately $17,500 over a 6-year ownership term.

The new 2025 Ford Police Interceptor Utility is now shipping to police agencies across the country, marking a significant step forward in law enforcement technology.
