Aid Scenario in Gaza Discussed: Perspective from Norwegian Refugee Council's Ahmed Bayram

In a conversation with NPR, Ahmed Bayram, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) delivering aid in Gaza, expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis in the region, where the NRC has been coping with a suffocating blockade that has left them with limited supplies of basic necessities.

"The situation is much the same as before, with the blockade continuing to severely hamper aid deliveries," Bayram explained. According to Bayram, the NRC has macro running through their last stocks of shelter items and baby supplies, and they are still providing water, albeit in shrinking quantities.

Bayram also addressed the recently established U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), questioning its operations and researching whether it has been spotted on the ground in Gaza this week. The organizations report that they have not witnessed or heard about the GHF's activities, partly because, as Israeli authorities have reportedly installed distribution points far from where people have been displaced. Bayram believes that placing a supply hub miles away from impacted areas raises questions about the organization's intentions and its ability to aid those who genuinely need it.

"There are numerous food trucks awaiting entry into Gaza, yet we see this new plan as a distraction from addressing the immediate needs of the people," said Bayram. He suggested moving away from the GHF plan and instead focusing on enabling food to be delivered to the core of displaced communities in the northern and central parts of Gaza.

In response to concerns about diverting supplies to Hamas, Bayram stated that the GHF model might miss providing aid to over half of the current population, given its lack of plans to offer support in key displacement areas such as in the north and center of Gaza.

When questioned about the recent resignation of Jake Wood, the head of the GHF, Bayram commented that it demonstrated the non-starter nature of the entire idea.

The NRC continues to call for an end to the blockade and a rapid increase in international aid for the people of Gaza, who are struggling to survive amid the ongoing crisis.
