Aigües Manresa Launches IoT Project to Enhance Water Management

Aigües Manresa, the water utility company, is implementing IoT technology to monitor its water systems in real-time. The project, advised by CREAF researcher Joan Masó, aims to enhance water management, reduce leaks, and improve incident response. It covers both drinking water and wastewater networks, providing a holistic view of the water cycle.

The project uses IoT devices like sensors and flow meters to transmit data to a centralized information system. This data helps control variables such as flow, pressure, and consumption in real-time, enabling quick detection of leaks and improved maintenance. The OGC, a global organization promoting environmental data reuse, supports this initiative. Prominent members like NASA, Amazon, and the European Space Agency endorse its work.

The project aligns with the UN's sustainable development goals, aiming to ensure universal access to water, protect aquatic ecosystems, and promote balanced economic and social development. Efficient water management also improves resource conservation, environmental protection, public health, climate change resilience, and community participation. Dr. Josep Maria Mallarach, another CREAF expert in geographic information systems, also advises the project.

Aigües Manresa and CREAF collaborate on the 'Sustainability in the Water Cycle' project, using the international SensorThings API standard for a solid, compatible, and geographically integrated database. This digitalized water management approach helps conserve the finite water resource and ensures sustainable management for future generations.
