In the ever-evolving world of packaging, companies are continually seeking ways to make their products more sustainable and consumer-friendly. This year, several notable developments have been announced in the beverage sector.

Kingsland Drinks, a leading player in the industry, has taken a significant step forward by introducing a new, FSC-certified cartonboard format for canned wines and ready-to-drink cocktails, in partnership with MM Packaging. This innovative solution offers a more sustainable, protective, and multi-functional packaging option.

Jo Taylorson, head of Marketing & Product Management at Kingsland Drinks, expressed her enthusiasm for the new format, stating that cans represent a format with significant growth potential. The packs, made from FSC-certified virgin fibre board, can also be printed for additional branding and a premium look.

The 'shelf-ready' boxes for Woodforde's beer are expected to resist water damage, catch a consumer's eye, and encourage repeat purchases. MM Packaging Deeside Managing Director, Julian Freeman, mentioned that Kingsland Drinks has benefited greatly from MM Packaging's expertise and innovation.

Meanwhile, in the battery sector, Aagard and Energizer have produced a 'retail-ready' one-piece case for batteries. This new format, which can hold either eight or twelve batteries, features a perforated zip-tear around the middle for ease of use. The one-piece case supports both stand-up pouches and hang-tab cartons, offering a versatile solution for battery packaging.

The new format is expected to help Energizer eliminate 2.5 million pounds of plastic from its packaging, demonstrating the potential for such innovations to make a significant environmental impact.

Smurfit Westrock, another packaging powerhouse, has provided 'shelf-ready' boxes for Woodforde's beer, further showcasing the variety of opportunities for fibre-based materials in the beverage sector.

Kingsland Drinks also made headlines earlier this year with the introduction of a bag-in-box format for its Campaneo wine brand. The bag-in-box format was designed to keep drinks fresh, offer value for money, and improve sustainability metrics.

In addition, Kingsland Drinks has invested in a world-class canning line with capacity to produce 26 million cans annually. The company is currently using the new format for its multipacks of twelve in 200ml and 250ml can formats.

These developments underscore the ongoing commitment of companies to create more sustainable, consumer-friendly packaging solutions, setting a promising precedent for the future of the industry.
