Allbirds Expands Retail Presence with REI Partnership
Allbirds, the eco-friendly footwear brand, has expanded its retail presence by partnering with outdoor recreation services cooperative REI. This move, announced in September 2021, is part of Allbirds' strategy to boost brand awareness and reach more customers. The partnership will see Allbirds' shoes sold in 41 REI stores and online.
Allbirds, which entered the apparel space in 2020 and launched an activewear line in 2021, has been seeking scale and durable profitability. The REI partnership supports these goals, allowing Allbirds to tap into REI's extensive customer base. The range includes popular products like the Tree Flyer running shoe, trail runner, and wool runner.
Allbirds' expansion into wholesale began in May 2022 with deals with Zalando and Public Lands, followed by a partnership with Nordstrom. This growth comes after a period of restructuring, during which Allbirds laid off staff and simplified its apparel strategy, focusing on its core famous footwear offerings. The brand's U.S. stores have seen remarkable growth, with sales increasing by over 150% in the first quarter of 2022.
With the REI partnership, Allbirds continues its strategic growth, building on its successful wholesale expansion. This move is expected to increase Allbirds' visibility and customer base, further solidifying its position in the sustainable famous footwear market.
