Amazon School in Vladivostok Marks 40 Years of Empowering Girls in Martial Arts

The Amazon School in Vladivostok, Russia, is marking its 40th anniversary on October 2nd. Established as a hub for girls' martial arts, it aims to create a sports center for all ages and abilities, fostering regional sports development and student potential.

The school, named after Yuri Alexeyevich Leonтьev, is unique in Russia, offering exclusive training in martial arts for girls. It currently trains 350 girls in sambo and sumo, with notable achievements including gold medals in sumo and bronze in sambo at the 2025 Russian Championship.

Girls typically join at nine years old, training in equipped public schools with assigned coaches at no cost. After four to five years, they can earn sports ranks and join the national team for further preparation and major competitions. The school's coaching staff, composed entirely of graduates, focuses on training future coaches and preserving Leonтьev's legacy. Four recent graduates were awarded the Master of Sports title in sumo by the Russian Ministry of Sports.

The Amazon School has produced six world champions in sambo and several graduates now work as coaches and trainers in the region. Looking ahead, graduates have been selected for international sumo competitions and national sambo championships. As it celebrates its 40th anniversary, the school aims to continue developing sports in the region and supporting its students' potential.
