In the tech world, a heated dispute between Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and the tech giants OpenAI and Apple, continues to unfold. The crux of the issue revolves around Musk's accusations of bias in Apple's App Store, particularly towards OpenAI's ChatGPT app.

Currently, ChatGPT holds the number one spot on the free apps chart, while Musk's AI application, Grok, ranks fifth. Another AI application developed by Musk, X, is ranked number 32 on the App Store. However, Musk has accused Apple of an "unequivocal antitrust violation," claiming that the company makes it impossible for AI companies besides OpenAI to reach the top spot and refuses to include his apps in the App Store's "Must Have" section.

Apple, in response, has firmly denied these allegations. The tech giant asserts that the App Store is "fair and free of bias," with app visibility determined by objective criteria such as charts, algorithmic recommendations, and curated editorial lists, not favouritism or partnerships.

To support their claim, Apple points to other AI apps like DeepSeek and Perplexity, which have also reached top rankings on the App Store. The recent update of Grok, which included the Spicy Mode and adult-themed celebrity deepfake making capabilities, sparked global outrage, further fuelling the debate.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has dismissed Musk's claims as "remarkable," suggesting that Musk manipulates algorithms on his app X to benefit his own ventures. Altman has even asked Musk to sign an affidavit stating that he never directed changes to the X algorithm in a way that hurt its competitor or helped his own companies.

The ongoing US Department of Justice antitrust lawsuit, targeting Apple, and the Apple vs Epic Games case, a recent legal dispute involving Apple, add another layer of complexity to this intriguing saga.

As the feud between the trio continues, the future shape of the App Store remains uncertain. Apple maintains its commitment to providing safe app discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers. The outcome of this dispute could have significant implications for the tech industry and the future of AI applications.
