Apple Set to Enter Server Market with Custom Chips, AI Ambitions
Apple is reportedly venturing into the server market, with plans to manufacture custom chips for data centers. The tech giant is expected to reveal more about its AI and datacenter ambitions at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
The rumored server chips will be fabricated by TSMC, Apple's longstanding chip manufacturing partner. While Apple has not confirmed the timeline, industry insiders expect these chips to be ready by late 2025, using a 3nm manufacturing process. Apple's server chips are likely intended for its own data centers, but a potential sale of Mac servers or workstations is not out of the question.
Apple is also rumored to be developing its own Large Language Model (LLM) and adding major AI features to iOS 18, set to launch alongside the iPhone 16 series. The company is prioritizing AI processing in its server chip design, focusing on power efficiency and integrating hardware and software. Apple is accelerating the release of next-gen M4-based Macs, with AI capabilities as a major selling point.
Apple's expansion into the server market, coupled with its AI advancements, signals a significant shift in the company's strategy. The 2024 WWDC could provide more insights into these plans, potentially revealing details about Apple's server chips and AI ambitions.
