Apple TV Plus Revolutionizes Broadcasting with iPhone 17 Pro
Apple TV Plus has revolutionised broadcasting by harnessing the power of iPhones. The recent Red Sox versus Tigers baseball game saw iPhone 16 Pro units capturing live footage, integrated into the broadcast, and offering unique angles and quick repositioning.
Each iPhone ran a professional camera app with manual controls, utilising external SSDs for sustained bitrates and ProDock for genlock and timecode synchronisation. The workflow involved capturing in Apple Log 2 or ProRes, syncing with genlock and timecode, recording on external SSDs, grading, and delivery.
The iPhones were positioned around the ballpark, including dugouts and structures, providing intimate moments and fast movement capture. The feeds landed in the switcher at true broadcast frame rates, with on-screen labels indicating when they were live. Filmmakers can now expect improved angles, matching, sync, thermal headroom, and the ability to replicate the look using iPhone 16 Pro and specific accessories.
Apple's own technology, featuring a new A19 Pro chipset, advanced camera sensors, and innovative features like Center Stage and Dual Capture, has enabled iPhones to replace traditional cameras in live broadcasting. This opens up new creative possibilities without compromises, as seen in the recent baseball game broadcast.
