Bitso Appoints Luis Urrutia as General Counsel and EVP of Global Regulatory Affairs

Luis Urrutia, a globally recognised expert in financial regulation and anti-money laundering (AML), has joined Bitso as the General Counsel and Executive Vice President (EVP) of Global Regulatory Affairs. Bitso, a leading financial services company in Latin America with a focus on crypto, announced Urrutia's appointment to strengthen its global regulatory strategy and reinforce its commitment to regulatory excellence and financial democratization in the region.

Urrutia brings a distinguished background to Bitso, having served nearly a decade at the Mexican Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP). In his roles, he served as Federal Deputy Attorney General for Financial Affairs and Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), where he led the design and implementation of the first comprehensive framework against money laundering and terrorist financing (AML/CFT) in Mexico.

Following his tenure at the SHCP, Urrutia became President of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global standard-setting body for AML. He later served as General Counsel of the Bank of Mexico and Deputy General Counsel of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he addressed financial integrity, fintech innovation, governance, and anti-corruption matters.
