Approval granted for MG's upcoming electric SUV, the MGS6 EV, to be sold in Australia

The British automaker, MG, has revealed key details about its upcoming electric vehicle, the MGS6, which is set to make its debut Down Under later this year.

The MGS6 EV is poised to be larger than its predecessor, the MGS5 EV SUV, potentially growing to a size close to a 4.7-metre SUV. This expansion in size is expected to provide more interior space for passengers and cargo.

The MGS6 EV will be built on MG's Modular Scalable Platform, which was first introduced locally in the MG4 affordable hatchback. This platform is designed to offer flexibility and scalability, allowing MG to cater to a wide range of vehicle sizes and types.

The MGS6 EV will be available in four variants, each offering a distinct combination of battery pack and drivetrain options. The smaller battery pack, with Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, has a capacity of 62 kWh and powers the entry-level rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant. The larger battery pack, with Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) chemistry, boasts a capacity of 77 kWh and will be found in the remaining three variants, including two RWD options and a top-spec all-wheel-drive (AWD) version.

Regarding the 77 kWh battery pack variants, it's yet to be confirmed whether they can be charged up to 100% for daily use. However, the smaller 62 kWh battery pack has been confirmed to support daily charging.

As for the MGS6's trim levels, regulatory documentation refers to them as "COM", "LUX" and "FLG". These acronyms typically signify different feature or option packages, with "COM" focusing on comfort, "LUX" adding luxury features, and "FLG" representing the top-tier variant with the most comprehensive set of features.

Riz Akhtar, a mechanical engineer based in Melbourne, has shown great interest in the MGS6 EV. As the founder of carloop, a platform that specialises in Australian EV data, insight reports, and trends, Akhtar is eager to see the starting price of the MGS6 EV when it is announced, anticipating it to be closer to $50,000. Akhtar, who currently drives a red Tesla Model 3, has a passion for cars, particularly electric vehicles, and wants to help reduce transport emissions in Australia.

The specific sales timeline for the MGS6 EV in Australia has not been announced yet. However, the MGS6 EV has received approval documentation in Australia for 2025, implying that it could potentially be sold in Australia later in the year.

Stay tuned for more updates on the MGS6 EV as MG continues to reveal more details about this exciting new electric vehicle.

The MG MGS6 EV's various battery pack and drivetrain options indicate a potential foray into the finance industry, as consumers may seek competitive financing options for their electric vehicle purchases.

The use of technology in the MG MGS6 EV, such as Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) and Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) battery chemistries, showcases MG's commitment to innovation within the automotive and transportation industries, striving for efficiency and sustainability.
