Argentina's AlmaGBA Expands Battery Storage with Two New Contracts
Argentina's largest battery storage procurement scheme, AlmaGBA, has awarded two new contracts, adding 46 MW to its existing 667 MW. The 24 MW Chingolo Sull BESS and the 22 MW Brown BESS projects were secured by Sullair and Rowing respectively, at a price of $12,591 per megawatt, per month.
The extension of the storage program was made possible by a flexible mechanism in AlmaGBA's bidding documents, allowing projects with lower bid prices to be included. This flexibility has enabled the scheme to exceed its initial target, now totaling 713 MW of project capacity.
The awarded BESS projects will be connected to Edesur networks in the AMBA region, providing operational backup during peak demand or supply disruptions. Both projects are set to strengthen Argentina's electricity grid reliability.
The Argentine Energy Secretariat has implemented a mandatory National Registry of Electric Energy Storage Projects to centralize information, standardize criteria, and enhance oversight of the Argentinian storage market. With the latest awards, the AlmaGBA initiative continues to drive growth in the country's energy storage sector.
