In a significant move to boost innovation and growth in the industry, Chinese tech giant Oppo and German automaker Volkswagen have entered into a bilateral patent licensing agreement. This partnership is expected to empower Volkswagen to improve its software experience in connected cars, marking a step towards creating a long-term, healthy, and sustainable intellectual property ecosystem.

Oppo, renowned for its extensive patent portfolio, holds more than 62,000 granted patents globally. The company's 5G SEPs are currently distributed in over 40 countries and regions, positioning Oppo as a global leader in 5G patent strength, as evidenced by its eighth rank globally, according to LexisNexis IPlytics, as of the start of 2025.

Vincent Lin, Head of Patent Licensing at Oppo, expressed delight about the collaboration, expressing appreciation for the Volkswagen IP team's recognition of the value of this cooperation. This partnership is further recognition of Oppo's leadership in cellular technology innovation.

For Volkswagen, this agreement provides a stable global base for mobile connectivity, a crucial aspect that the automaker has been struggling with outside of Europe. The German brand has lagged behind competitors like Chinese brands and even other German brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz in this area.

This is Oppo's first bilateral patent licensing agreement with a car company, following its previous agreement with the automobile company BYD, signed in June 2022. The agreement covers Volkswagen's global product portfolio, underscoring the broader adoption of Oppo's cellular standard-essential technologies beyond smartphones, especially in the automotive sector.

The partnership may lead to the introduction of connectivity in Volkswagen products in this part of the world. Volkswagen, however, has a separate deal with MG for the development of in-car connectivity.

As of March 2025, Oppo has filed more than 113,000 patent applications globally, a testament to its commitment to innovation and growth. The partnership between Oppo and Volkswagen is expected to empower long-term innovation and industry growth, setting a positive precedent for future collaborations in the tech and automotive industries.
