Autonomous driving ahead in Germany, according to half of the population's expectations

In a recent survey conducted by Bitkom, it has been revealed that the majority of Germans are open to embracing digital mobility and autonomous vehicles. The findings suggest a strong desire for modernization and expansion in various aspects of transportation.

The survey shows that 99% of Germans are open to using autonomous means of transport, with 78% seeing sharing offers as a good alternative to traditional means of transport. This openness extends to various modes of transport, as 72% would use an autonomous U- or S-Bahn, 70% an autonomous bus, and 68% an autonomous mini or shuttle bus.

When it comes to personal vehicles, 57% would even want AI to intervene in case of speeding or risky driving. Similarly, 76% want an AI that takes control in case of an emergency to prevent accidents. The survey also indicates that 65% of Germans with a car in their household would be willing to give up their private car under certain conditions.

The survey further reveals a strong preference for German brands in the development of autonomous vehicle technology. The companies that enjoy the most approval from Germans are primarily German automakers, which are highly regarded for their quality and design. 82% of potential electric car buyers prefer German models, and German brands lead in the perception of quality in autonomous driving technology.

In addition to personal vehicles, Germans also express a desire for the expansion and modernization of railway tracks. 61 percent wish for the expansion and modernization of railway tracks, and 54% want to prioritize the modernization and digitization of public transport.

The survey also highlights the importance of digital mobility stations for seamless switching between transport modes and sharing offers. 45% want the construction of such stations, and 71% consider sharing an eco-friendly option.

The findings also indicate a challenge in a lack of engineers with IT expertise in the digitization of mobility. 44% see this as a challenge, but there is a strong belief that cooperation with tech companies will be indispensable in the international race.

In conclusion, Germany has the know-how and the openness of the population to be a pioneer in this area. However, for Germany to take a leading role, especially in the key theme of autonomous driving, it needs future large model regions instead of many isolated individual projects. This requires long-term financing with cross-departmental bundling of funds.

The survey findings suggest a strong desire for digital mobility and autonomous vehicles among the German population. With the right investments and cooperation, Germany could indeed become a leader in this exciting and rapidly evolving field.
