Aurora and Continental Partner to Scale Autonomous Trucking

Aurora Innovation, a leading autonomous vehicle company, is set to take a significant step forward in the autonomous trucking industry. The company plans to deploy autonomous trucks at scale after its initial driverless launch, scheduled for the end of 2024.

The future Aurora Driver, designed to deliver customer value for one million miles, is at the heart of this ambitious plan. Aurora has partnered with Continental, a renowned automotive technology company, to make the unit economics of the Aurora Driver compelling and build a business for the long-term.

This partnership aims at high-volume manufacturing of autonomous trucking systems. Aurora and Continental are working closely to industrialize the fallback system for the Aurora Driver, a specialized secondary computer that can take over operation if a failure occurs in the primary system.

The dual engineering approach aims to reduce the exposure of the main and fallback system to single points of failure. Aurora is working with Continental's engineering team to provide this industrialized fallback system for the Aurora Driver.

The technologies for autonomous mobility present the biggest opportunity to transform driving behavior since the creation of the automobile. The partnership between Aurora and Continental is a meaningful step towards realizing this potential.

Aurora and Continental have finalized the design and architecture of a future fallback system and hardware for the Aurora Driver, an SAE Level 4 autonomous driving system. However, the search results do not provide information about the name of the customer to whom Continental will deliver the hardware and the fallback system of the Aurora driver in the start of production in 2027.

The future is exciting for Aurora and the autonomous trucking industry. With the deployment of the Aurora Driver planned for 2027, we can look forward to a future where autonomous trucks become a common sight on our roads.
