Wayve, a leading autonomous driving technology company, and Uber, the ride-hailing giant, have announced plans to launch public road trials of fully autonomous vehicles in London. The collaboration between the two companies, which began in 2024, is a significant step towards integrating autonomous vehicles into Uber's operations.

Rain Prakash, the head of Wayve's autonomy projects, will oversee the collaboration. The Department for Transport and Transport for London will work with the companies to manage approvals and permitting processes.

The primary aim of the trials is to assess autonomous vehicle performance in complex urban environments. Unlike traditional autonomous systems, Wayve's system is designed to adapt across different vehicle types and unfamiliar environments. The trials will involve Wayve's AI-driven technology operating within Uber's mobility platform.

The upcoming public road trials in London are a part of the ongoing collaboration between Wayve and Uber. They offer a distinct testing ground compared to locations in the United States due to London's varied road types, traffic conditions, and regulations.

The trials, expected to commence from spring 2026, are an extension of the work started in the collaboration between Wayve and Uber in 2024. The announcement follows the UK Government's confirmation of a new regulatory framework designed to fast-track commercial self-driving pilots.

The focus of the collaboration between Wayve and Uber is on integrating autonomous technology into Uber's operations. Wayve's approach, known as AV2.0, uses an Embodied AI model that learns to drive through real-world experience.

The collaboration between Wayve and Uber has been instrumental in the development of autonomous vehicles. It has been ongoing since 2024 and has been a key factor in preparing for the upcoming public road trials. The trials are expected to provide valuable insights into the performance of autonomous vehicles in urban environments, paving the way for their wider adoption.
