Battery-cell Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are introduced to a new innovation: a dual-sided simultaneous electrode coater from Dürr Systems.
Dürr Introduces Revolutionary GigaCoater with Siemens Technology
German engineering firm Dürr Systems has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) battery production industry with the introduction of its new coater, designed to support a complete electrode coating process. The new coater, aptly named the GigaCoater, utilizes Siemens technologies for tension-controlled coating capabilities.
Dürr's Business Development Director, David Ventola, considers the two-sided simultaneous electrode coating capabilities as a game-changer for EV battery production. This innovative feature is made possible by the GigaCoater's straight-path product flow on a single coating station. The process begins with slot-die coating on a backing roll, followed by tensioned-web slot-die coating to coat both sides of the current collector in one pass.
The GigaCoater's air flotation dryer enables simultaneous two-sided coating as the foil runs through a non-contact drying process. This unique float-drying process balances forces on both sides of the electrode, eliminating edge curl and potentially enhancing yields.
Dürr offers Tandem Coater equipment with integrated solvent recovery, as stated by Sales Director Jim Hartnett. The GigaCoater also incorporates this feature, aiming to reduce waste, labor, and energy costs while maintaining high-quality yields for Dürr's battery cell OEM customers.
For help with automation and controls, Dürr chose Siemens partner and systems integrator DMC. The GigaCoater's automation and control system contains numerous Siemens components from its Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) portfolio. The SIMATIC S7-1500 Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) oversee the two-sided simultaneous coating processes, precisely managing the movement, alignment, and timing of numerous servo motors as the copper foil substrate moves through the machine and its float-drying modules.
The SIMATIC HMI TP900 Comfort Panels provide a touchscreen for operators to manage coating and drying processes. The SINAMICS S120 Drives offer integrated safety, energy savings, and network connectivity for a wide range of power ratings, further enhancing the GigaCoater's efficiency and performance.
Dürr also plans to use sophisticated 3D simulations in collaboration with customer engineering teams to optimize systems and save CAPEX. Additionally, the company aims to simulate full production processes to further reduce OPEX.
Perhaps most notably, Dürr envisions enabling customers to use AI for monitoring production end-to-end and alerting operators when process anomalies occur. This proactive approach is designed to prevent costly disruptions and improve overall production efficiency.
The Siemens SIMATIC WinCC Unified System links production data with IT enterprise systems, providing valuable insights for optimizing processes and improving overall operations. With these advanced features, the Dürr GigaCoater is poised to revolutionize the EV battery production industry.
Dürr's team assesses customers to recommend either Tandem or simultaneous two-sided coating machines to support their objectives, ensuring that each customer receives the optimal solution for their specific needs. This customer-centric approach, coupled with cutting-edge technology, makes the Dürr GigaCoater an exciting development in the EV battery production landscape.
