Bavaria Toughens Drone Defense: Police Can Shoot Down Rogues
Bavaria is bolstering its defenses against rogue drones. Minister-President Markus Söder has proposed a bill allowing police to shoot down drones as a last resort. The move follows mysterious drone flights at Munich Airport and other sites, which authorities are still investigating.
The bill aims to provide legal and technical means for Bavarian police to tackle drone threats. It's part of a wider strategy that includes establishing a new drone competence and defense center in Erding. This center will help police verify, disrupt, or take control of drones before resorting to shooting them down.
Authorities have warned that even reckless private drone flights could potentially aid Russia's strategy to create uncertainty. Germany's Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is also planning to strengthen federal drone defense with a joint drone defense center.
The Bavarian government's bill, if passed, will give police more tools to deal with drone threats. The new center in Erding will enhance Bavarian police's capabilities in this area. Meanwhile, investigations into the recent drone flights continue, with authorities urging caution against speculation.
