In the heart of Germany, Bavaria's electronics industry is experiencing a wave of mixed signals following the recent EU-US trade agreement and related developments in 2025.

According to Bertram Brossardt, CEO of the Association of Bavarian Business, the agreement provides more planning security for companies in Bavaria, as it helps stabilize and even improve some aspects of foreign trade. This is particularly true for Bavaria's exports, as the state benefits significantly from the positive trend in international demand.

However, the domestic market remains cautious. Factory orders for electronics and related sectors dropped sharply by 17.7% in May 2025, following some large orders in April. This short-term volatility and uneven demand, particularly for computer, electronic, and optical products, indicate ongoing challenges.

The electronics industry in Bavaria is currently in a poor economic situation, according to a survey conducted by "bayme vbm" from July 2 to 23 this year. Despite this, orders in the German electro and digital industry are increasing overall, with new orders rising for the third consecutive month as of May 2025.

The survey also revealed that about 26 percent of the surveyed companies stated that they did not pay additional tariffs. Half of the companies that export to the US stated that they or a US importer of their goods had paid tariffs on exported goods since early April this year.

Bavaria, due to its economic structure and large exports to the US, is more affected by the trade conflict than other states, according to Brossardt. However, the shortage of skilled workers is decreasing slightly, but still presents a significant challenge for many companies.

Bavaria is focusing heavily on sustainable and climate-neutral technologies within the electronics sector. Strategic projects like Bayernplan Energie 2040 and efforts toward climate neutrality by 2040 are driving a shift toward renewable energy sources and sustainable energy systems. The Bavarian Chips Alliance has also released a position paper focused on enhancing sustainability across the electronics value chain.

The EU-US trade agreement, often referred to as the 2025 trade truce, has helped support foreign demand and exports for Bavaria. However, the shift toward electronic invoicing regulations, which came into force starting January 2025, may be adding operational complexities for companies in Bavaria and Germany as a whole.

In summary, Bavaria’s electronics industry is benefiting from increased international demand likely supported by the 2025 EU-US trade agreement but also faces domestic market fluctuations and is proactively advancing sustainability and digital transformation in response to broader economic and environmental policies.

| Aspect | Status in 2025 | |-----------------------------------|-----------------------------------------| | Overall orders | Rising, +5% year-on-year in early 2025 | | Foreign orders | Increased, +5.5% in May 2025 | | Domestic orders | Slight decline, -2.5% in May 2025 | | Factory orders for electronics | Volatile, -17.7% in May 2025 but recent growth overall | | Sustainability focus | Strong emphasis on climate-neutral tech and green electronics| | Impact of EU-US trade agreement | Supports foreign demand and exports but domestic market remains cautious | | Regulatory environment | Increasing digitization, mandatory e-invoicing impacting operations |

Despite the challenges, Brossardt remains optimistic about the future development of the industry, stating that companies are more optimistic about the future. He refers to the agreement as a "light at the end of the tunnel" despite the difficult situation. The long-term goal remains to reduce tariffs and trade barriers.

In an effort to mitigate the ongoing challenges in the electronics industry, Bavaria is focusing on vocational training and sustainable technology, investing in the Bayernplan Energie 2040 and the Bavarian Chips Alliance, as well as making strides towards climate neutrality by 2040.
