Bitkom President Urges Germany to Act on Digital Climate Solutions

Bitkom President Achim Berg has emphasized the vital role of digitalization in combating climate change and achieving sustainability. He urges the federal government to transform announcements into concrete actions, backing digital applications and business models that serve environmental and climate goals.

Berg acknowledges that digitalization itself consumes energy and resources. He stresses the importance of using green electricity to minimize its carbon footprint. He believes digital technologies provide practical solutions in various sectors, such as smart grids, smart mobility services, and smart farming.

Berg estimates that Germany's data centers annually consume around 12 billion kilowatt hours of energy, equivalent to Berlin's yearly consumption. To support small and medium-sized enterprises, he proposes training employees on digitalization and smart goals. Additionally, he recommends improving framework conditions for venture capital and growth capital to foster digital innovations for the environment and climate.

Berg suggests creating a central environmental cloud for public access to environmental data. He also recommends supporting organizations like environmental agencies, digital innovation hubs, and research institutions specializing in climate technology. Berg proposes using industrial waste heat, particularly from data centers, to supplement district heating supply, given the shutdown of coal-fired power plants.

Bitkom President Achim Berg has outlined a comprehensive digital strategy to fight climate change. He calls for the federal government's support in implementing these measures, including employee training, improved funding, a central environmental cloud, and waste heat utilization. With over half of German citizens agreeing that digitalization aids in combating climate change, Berg's proposals could significantly contribute to sustainability goals.
