BMW M5 Gets Four-Wheel Drive for 2012 to Rival Mercedes E63 AMG

BMW has made a strategic move for the 2012 M5, introducing a four-wheel-drive option to rival the Mercedes E63 AMG and Jaguar XFR. This shift is likely to attract more buyers than purists, as confirmed by BMW M GmbH.

The 2012 BMW M5 will come with an all-wheel-drive chassis, a first for the model. This change is pragmatic, aiming to compete with other luxury performance sedans that offer this feature. Despite the shift from rear-wheel drive, a properly set up 4WD system in the new M5 is expected to feel similar to a RWD setup in most driving conditions. However, the 4WD option will prove particularly beneficial in slippery conditions, provided winter tyres are fitted.

The 2012 BMW M5's four-wheel-drive option is a strategic move to compete in the luxury performance sedan segment. While it may not appease purists, it offers enhanced traction and safety, making it an attractive option for many buyers.
