BMW Removes iDrive Controller in iX3 and iX, Exploring New Navigation Technologies
In a strategic move, BMW has discontinued the iDrive controller in its latest offerings, the iDrive X and iX3, as part of the introduction of the new "Neue Klasse" with the Panoramic iDrive system. This system, designed for voice commands, gesture control, and touch, aims to provide a more intuitive and practical user experience, particularly during driving.
The decision to abandon the iDrive controller was not made lightly. BMW carefully considered the controller's limited use during driving and its lack of popularity in several markets. The steering wheel has been chosen as the ideal location for the new haptic controls, making them easily accessible and convenient for drivers.
The repositioning of the display and the emphasis on touch, voice, and steering wheel commands have made the missing iDrive controller less missed. Reaching the display is now easier, as it can be done by extending the hand from the steering wheel. The touchscreen remains as an alternative to the iDrive controller.
The new haptic controls on the steering wheel are designed for use during driving, prioritizing practicality over nostalgia. Enhanced voice commands are available in iX3 and iDrive X cars, further improving the driving experience.
The iDrive X system, with its more intuitive layout, is a testament to BMW's commitment to providing controls that can be used while driving. The elimination of the iDrive controller has improved cockpit ergonomics, creating a sleeker and more streamlined driving experience.
