BMW's 5 Series heads a significant internal combustion engine (ICE) overhaul, featuring the Neue Klasse facelift
BMW Unveils New Design Strategy: Neue Klasse to Unify Combustion and Electric Models
BMW has announced a significant shift in its design strategy, aiming to unify its combustion and electric offerings under a single aesthetic and technological umbrella. Known as the Neue Klasse, this new design philosophy will be rolled out across the entire BMW product portfolio, marking a new era for the iconic German automaker.
The updated X5, along with revisions to other models, is part of BMW's rapid strategy to ensure its combustion and electric offerings march forward together, both stylistically and technologically. The upcoming iX3 and next-gen 3 Series are expected to share a similar styling direction with the updated 5 Series, which was launched last year.
BMW's design boss, Adrian van Hooydonk, stated that each model will retain distinct character traits, but all will share a family resemblance grounded in the Neue Klasse design. Bernd Körber, BMW's product boss, described the Neue Klasse as the toolbox for all future BMW cars, ICE included.
The new Panoramic iDrive system may be a key feature of the Neue Klasse, with a larger head-up display (HUD), a new 17.9-inch angled touchscreen, a reshaped steering wheel, and the near-total removal of physical buttons.
The 5 Series will retain its current CLAR underpinnings, but the update is intended to align the 5 Series with BMW's upcoming Neue Klasse EVs. The 5 Series facelift is a necessary bridging move as BMW works to future-proof its ICE range against the rapid onslaught of EVs.
The updated 5 Series will feature a bold new front end, and will continue to offer a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with either a mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid option. The M5 is expected to continue with its 717kW 4.4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid setup.
BMW's design strategy will ensure that all models, including the updated X5, X2, X7, 2 Series, and 7 Series, will share a family resemblance grounded in the Neue Klasse design. The Neue Klasse design will be applied to all future BMW models, including those that are less than three years old.
The Neue Klasse design is intended to align all BMW models, both combustion and electric, visually and digitally. It represents the next generation of all cars at BMW, marking a significant part of BMW's strategy to ensure its combustion and electric offerings are stylistically and technologically aligned.
