Bremen Launches €5.7M Energy Research Hub to Tackle Climate Crisis

Bremen is set to become a hub for sustainable energy research, with the launch of the 'Interdisciplinary Energy Research Laboratory' (IdEaL) project. Backed by €5.7 million in funding, IdEaL aims to tackle the climate crisis by boosting renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The project, a collaboration between the University of Bremen and the Bremer Institute for Production and Logistics (BIBA), will explore innovative ways to utilise waste heat and convert processes. It will also investigate energy consumption on campus to model and reduce usage, with a focus on electricity, heat, and cooling.

Artificial intelligence will play a key role in increasing energy efficiency in buildings and facilities. A test facility is planned at the university to study the construction of power grids capable of handling fluctuations from renewable energy sources. BIBA will research sustainable energy systems and digitalisation of production in a model factory to support the energy transition in companies.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Andrzej Rasinski is managing the allocation of €1.6 million from the European Regional Development Fund for the project. Science Senator Kathrin Moosdorf emphasises the practical relevance and potential of IdEaL in achieving climate goals and strengthening Bremen's scientific location.

The IdEaL project in Bremen is set to make significant strides in promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency. With €4.1 million from the Senate of Bremen and €1.6 million from the European Fund for Regional Development, the project aims to address the climate change through interdisciplinary research and practical application.
