Broadcasting Corporation Gray Media Introduces Two Distinct High Dynamic Range Standards Across Multiple Next-Generation TV Markets
Gray Media Prepares for Super Bowl Broadcast in HDR
Gray Media, a leading broadcaster, has announced its plans to deliver an enhanced viewing experience for the upcoming Super Bowl, set to take place in just two and a half weeks. The event will be broadcasted in High Dynamic Range (HDR) for viewers in several markets.
The broadcaster's focus for the Super Bowl is its Fox affiliates, and it will be using multiple HDR alternatives, including HDR10 and Dolby Vision, to ensure the best possible picture quality. The NFC Championship Game (Jan. 26) and the Super Bowl (Feb. 9) will also be broadcasted in HDR.
Gray Media's adoption of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 supports these HDR technologies. The ATSC 3.0 standard, which enables progressive video formats with high resolutions up to 4K (3840×2160), is essential for HDR rendering. It also supports HEVC Main 10 profile encoding and can handle HDR using transfer functions like hybrid log–gamma (HLG) and perceptual quantizer (PQ).
In addition to the Super Bowl, Gray Media has already demonstrated its commitment to HDR broadcasting by presenting the Kentucky Derby and the festivities leading up to the horse race in Dolby Vision in May 2024. The broadcaster has also carried the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics in Dolby Vision on some of its NBC affiliates.
Gray Media is not limited to a single HDR format. It is HDR format-agnostic and will support other types of HDR as well, including Advanced HDR by Technicolor single-layer high dynamic range (SL-HDR).
The broadcaster is currently working to expand HDR transmission to various markets, including Atlanta, Las Vegas, Davenport, Iowa, Mobile, Alabama-Pensacola, Florida, Birmingham, Alabama, Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Portland, Oregon.
NextGen TV viewers can now pick the flavor of HDR they prefer and automatically display it. Gray Media is dedicated to providing viewers with the best viewing experience possible and is committed to leveraging the advanced capabilities of ATSC 3.0 during flagship broadcasts like the Super Bowl and paving the way for similar future live events adopting NextGen TV enhancements.
