Budget electric SUV by BYD debuts at a low price point of $A16,100
Affordable Electric SUV Hits Australian Market: BYD's Atto 2 Arrives Late 2025
BYD, the Chinese automaker known for its electric vehicles, is set to launch a new, more affordable variant of the Atto 2 electric SUV in Australia. The Australian version, scheduled to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2025, will offer a driving range of over 300 km under WLTP standards, making it one of the most affordable electric SUVs on the market.
Unfortunately, the most affordable variant of the Atto 2 available in China, priced around A$16,100, will not be imported to Australia. Instead, the Australian market will receive a 51 kWh battery variant equipped with a 130 kW electric motor, delivering up to 290 Nm of torque. This variant also features BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 with Cell-to-Body construction, enhancing safety and chassis rigidity.
Key features of the Atto 2 include a compact SUV size, a rotating 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, head-up display, Level 1 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability at 3.3 kW power output.
Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop, a company specialising in Australian EV data, insight reports, and trends, commented on the upcoming launch, stating, "The new Atto 2 variant is designed for younger city drivers, with some smart driving features removed." Akhtar, a mechanical engineer with a passion for electric vehicles, spent 7 years building transport infrastructure before starting carloop.
BYD has already reached 1.5 million sales in its Yuan Family, which includes the Atto 3 and the Atto 2 (Yuan Up). The Atto 3, known as Yuan Plus in China, is part of BYD's expanding lineup of affordable electric SUVs.
Pricing details for the Australian market have yet to be announced. However, with the Australian Atto 2 offering a driving range of over 300 km, it is expected to be among the most affordable electric SUVs available. Stay tuned for more updates on the launch of the Atto 2 in Australia.
