Businesses Continue to Struggle with Cyber Maturity, According to New Report

In a joint effort, Commvault and GigaOm have released the much-anticipated 2024 Cyber Recovery Readiness Report. However, the report does not disclose the name of the researcher involved in its creation.

The report identifies five crucial capabilities, or resiliency markers, that are essential for organizations to bolster their cybersecurity defenses. These markers were determined through data analysis of various factors, including breach frequency, resilience technology deployment, and data recovery speed.

One of the key resiliency markers is the use of security tools that provide early warning about potential risks, including insider threats. Another important marker is the maintenance of a known-clean dark site or secondary system, which serves as an isolated environment to store an immutable copy of the data.

Defined runbooks, roles, and processes for incident response are also resiliency markers for organizations. Companies that have deployed these markers have been found to recover faster from cyberattacks and experience fewer breaches.

The report further reveals that cyber mature organizations, those that have deployed at least four of the five resiliency markers, recover 41% faster than organizations with zero or one marker. Moreover, 70% of cyber mature organizations test their recovery plans quarterly, compared to 43% of organizations with only zero or one maturity marker.

Interestingly, the report finds that less than 85% of respondents surveyed think about resiliency in layers, a critical approach for organizations to adopt for enhanced cyber resilience. This suggests that there is room for improvement in the way organizations approach cyber resilience.

The report also highlights that 54% of cyber mature organizations are completely confident in their ability to recover from a breach, compared to only 33% of less prepared organizations.

Based on a survey of 1,000 security and IT respondents from 11 countries, the report focuses on strategies for businesses to increase resilience against cyberattacks. The specific five resiliency markers identified in the report have not been disclosed.

In conclusion, the 2024 Cyber Recovery Readiness Report provides valuable insights into the importance of resiliency markers for organizations seeking to enhance their cybersecurity defenses. By adopting these markers, organizations can expect to recover faster from cyberattacks and experience fewer breaches.
