BYD Speeds Up European EV Expansion, Plans Local Production Within Three Years
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD is accelerating its European expansion. The company aims to manufacture all cars sold in Europe locally within three years to dodge EU tariffs. BYD is also considering building a third factory in Europe, with battery production a key focus.
BYD's European production strategy is already underway. The company is building a factory in Hungary, set to start production by the end of 2023. This facility, located in Szeged, will also serve as the next European production site for BYD batteries, with operations commencing in 2026.
BYD is also exploring other European locations for further investment. The company has plans for another factory in Turkey, scheduled to start production in late 2026. BYD is considering all European countries for these expansions and is in contact with local authorities. Energy costs play a significant role in deciding the location for new factories.
In the meantime, BYD is exporting plug-in hybrids to dominate European sales in the short term. The company has started shipping electric vehicles from Thailand to Europe, with the first batch of 1,000 Dolphin models sent in September. The initial Thai exports target key European markets like Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
BYD's European strategy is clear: localize production to avoid tariffs, expand battery production, and explore new markets. With factories planned in Hungary and Turkey, and exports already underway from Thailand, BYD is poised to make a significant impact on the European EV market within the next few years.
