Canada Invests CAD 13M in Dual-Use Space Tech for Security and Market Expansion

Canada has allocated CAD 13 million for dual-use space technology development, with the aim of bolstering national security and expanding market reach. The funding, part of a CAD 9 billion military spending boost, remains unclear on the specific companies benefiting from the investment. Meanwhile, Canada's space agency is enhancing Earth observation capabilities and strengthening international ties.

The CAD 13 million funding will support advancements in satellite servicing, refueling, sustainable orbit access, advanced robotics, AI, critical deep space systems, and cybersecurity. These technologies have both civilian and military applications, aligning with Canada's defense industrial strategy.

Earth observation, a key focus of the investment, aids in monitoring wildfires, Arctic changes, biodiversity loss, and extreme climate events. This data empowers communities to safeguard infrastructure and respond to environmental challenges.

Canada's space agency is also expanding international partnerships. It is collaborating with the European Space Agency and Japan's JAXA, with plans to capture Japan's first HTV-X cargo resupply vehicle this fall using the Canadarm2 on the International Space Station. Additionally, the agency will spend CAD 5 million on projects that broaden the use of satellite imagery and data for Earth observation.

Canada's investment in dual-use space technology aims to address emerging security threats, reinforce sovereignty, and support companies in accessing new markets. The funding, part of a larger military spending increase, focuses on Earth observation and international collaboration, with specific recipient companies yet to be disclosed.
