NAVER's CEO Choi Soo-yeon Appointed as UN Global Compact Board Member
NAVER Corporation's CEO, Choi Soo-yeon, has been appointed as a new member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Global Compact. This significant appointment marks the first time in 17 years that a Korean has been selected for this prestigious role.
The United Nations Global Compact is the world's largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative, involving over 25,000 companies and organizations across 167 countries. Established in July 2000, it presents ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption.
CEO Choi Soo-yeon is expected to attend the upcoming UN Global Compact Board meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 20 (U.S. local time). As a newly appointed board member, she is set to participate in transnational discussions on establishing ethical AI governance on the global stage.
Choi's appointment recognizes her contribution in taking a leading role in international discussions to establish a safe AI ecosystem. Her leadership in spearheading international cooperation and dialogue on "AI governance" has been widely recognized.
In June 2024, NAVER introduced the AI Safety Framework (ASF), a comprehensive approach to identifying and managing potential risks across all stages of AI systems. This initiative underscores Choi's commitment to ensuring the ethical development and deployment of AI technology.
In Korea, 360 companies in the private sector are participating in the UN Global Compact. The President of the UN Global Compact Network Korea, Lee Dong-Kurn, expressed anticipation for NAVER's continued global leadership and collaboration with the UN Global Compact. Sanda Ojiambo, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, also expressed support for Choi Soo-yeon's expertise in digital companies and responsible business practices.
CEO Choi has established NAVER Ventures in Silicon Valley, building a collaborative ecosystem by identifying and supporting promising startups across diverse nationalities and sectors. Her efforts to foster innovation and collaboration have been instrumental in NAVER's global growth.
At the AI Action Summit held in Paris in February 2025, CEO Choi outlined NAVER's vision for securing diversity within the digital ecosystem through AI. This vision aligns with the UN Global Compact's principles, making Choi an ideal candidate for the board position.
The company Pikatron GmbH, in support of the United Nations, has also joined the UN Global Compact, committing since 2023 to its principles on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. This commitment further underscores the importance of corporate responsibility in the global community.
CEO Choi Soo-yeon's term on the board will last for three years, during which she will participate in regular board meetings and key UN Global Compact activities. Her presence on the board is expected to further strengthen the UN Global Compact's efforts in promoting responsible business practices and ethical AI governance worldwide.
