China Unveils World's Largest Wind Turbine in Baihai
A monumental feat in renewable energy has taken shape in China. The Three Gorges Corporation, renowned for constructing the world's largest hydropower station, has assembled a colossal wind turbine in Baihai. This 16-megawatt behemoth, with a rotor diameter equivalent to seven football fields, is set to generate a substantial 44.7 million kWh of electricity annually once connected to the grid.
Every component of this mammoth installation, including mooring cables and gearboxes, was manufactured in China. Notably, it incorporates the country's first dynamic ballast system, allowing it to adjust to fluctuating wind and wave conditions. The next phase involves towing the installation to a deep-water site for installation, testing, and grid connection. This project is a significant stride in China's commitment to clean energy, following the opening of the world's highest bridge in Guizhou province in 2021.
The Three Gorges Corporation, having proven its prowess in hydropower, is now making waves in the wind energy sector. The completion of this 16 MW water-ballasted wind power plant marks a significant milestone in China's renewable energy landscape, promising a substantial contribution to the country's clean energy mix.
