China's 10,000-ton Green Hydrogen Refinery Project by LONGi Begins Operations
In a significant stride towards green energy, China's Sinopec has launched the operation of the nation's first 10,000-ton green hydrogen demonstration project. This project, a testament to China's commitment to clean energy, is the first in the country to realise the whole industrial chain integration of such a scale.
The refinery, located in China, aims to produce 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. The key technology behind this project is the Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) technology, an advanced electrolysis method developed in Germany, known for its high efficiency. This technology electrolyses water using renewable electricity from solar and possibly floating solar PV systems to produce green hydrogen at an industrial scale.
LONGi Hydrogen, a global leading green hydrogen production and solution provider, plays a crucial role in this project. The company supplies key technology and components, particularly related to solar power integration and electrolyzer systems. This enables the production of green hydrogen using renewable energy sources. LONGi Hydrogen's expertise in photovoltaics and electrolyzer equipment supports Sinopec’s goal of establishing a large-scale green hydrogen refinery that integrates green power generation and hydrogen production.
The project, which started operation on July 5, 2023, has successfully produced hydrogen and is supplying it to local petroleum refining enterprises as a power source. With a capacity to produce 20,000 metric tons of hydrogen a year, the green hydrogen produced by this project can reduce carbon dioxide emission by 485,000 tons per year.
LONGi Hydrogen's hydrogen production system and "Green Power + Green Hydrogen" solution are expected to significantly promote the development of hydrogen equipment and hydrogen energy industry chain, contributing to the realization of the "Zero Carbon" goal. Green hydrogen, produced directly from renewable energy such as solar and wind power, has no greenhouse gas emissions during production.
Established in 2000, LONGi has been committed to being the world's leading solar technology company, with a focus on customer-driven value creation for full scenario energy transformation. The company's mission is 'making the best of solar energy to build a green world'. LONGi has established five business sectors, including mono silicon wafers, cells and modules, commercial & industrial distributed solar solutions, green energy solutions, hydrogen equipment, and recently, green hydrogen products and solutions to support global zero carbon development.
The project has declared more than 10 patents and proprietary technologies related to electrolytic water hydrogen production, green hydrogen storage and transportation, thyristor rectification technology, intelligent control systems, and other innovative achievements.
