Chinese securities firm's digitally issued first public bond successfully launched by GTJAI

In mid-2025, Guotai Junan International (GTJAI) made history by issuing the first publicly offered digitally native bond by a Chinese securities firm. The digital bond, denominated in U.S. dollars, has a potential amount of up to US$300 million and a maturity of three years. The issuance was carried out using blockchain technology on the HSBC Orion platform, leveraging the XRP Ledger (XRPL) for creation and settlement.

Key features of GTJAI's digital bond include blockchain-based issuance, enhanced transparency and efficiency in issuance and settlement processes, reduced costs, and lower risks of settlement failures compared to traditional bonds. The bond maintains a minimum transaction size consistent with conventional bonds ($200,000), emphasizing operational similarity with traditional markets while exploiting digital benefits.

GTJAI acted as the lead underwriter, global coordinator, and issuer, demonstrating their pioneering role in digital finance within China. The issuance has regulatory approval with confirmation from the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, aligning with international regulatory standards.

The digital bond sets a significant precedent for Chinese financial institutions in blockchain-based capital raising, potentially catalyzing wider adoption of digital bonds in Asia and globally. It demonstrates the growing institutional adoption of blockchain technology in capital markets, promoting innovation in digital finance.

This issuance reflects GTJAI's strategic commitment to financial innovation and digital assets development. GTJAI's core business includes brokerage, corporate finance, asset management, loans and financing, financial products, catering to individual finance, institutional finance, and investment management.

The controlling shareholder, Guotai Haitong Securities (Stock Code: 601211.SH; 2611.HK), is a comprehensive financial provider with a long-term, sustainable, and overall leading position in China's capital markets. GTJAI is a subsidiary of Guotai Haitong Group and is based in Hong Kong with subsidiaries in Singapore, Vietnam, and Macau.

Digital bonds, like GTJAI's issuance, use blockchain or decentralized ledger technology (DLT) and provide greater transparency, reducing costs and risks of settlement failures. GTJAI's investor relations contact is at [email protected].
