Collision at Chinese air show results in Xpeng eVTOL vehicle catching fire.
In a surprising turn of events, Xpeng AeroHT, a subsidiary of the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng, experienced a mid-air collision between two of its eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) vehicles during a rehearsal for the Changchun air show.
The incident, which occurred on a grassy area, resulted in one of the eVTOLs bursting into flames upon landing. Fortunately, no one else was hurt in the incident, but the pilot of the damaged eVTOL was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.
Video footage shared on social media shows black smoke rising from the damaged eVTOL, with firetrucks and an ambulance present at the scene. Authorities have cleared the area and opened an investigation into the cause of the incident.
Xpeng AeroHT's eVTOLs are electric flying cars intended for short-distance passenger transport and potential pilotless operation. They are expected to be priced at approximately $300,000 (£220,000) each. The Land Aircraft Carrier, a passenger vehicle with a detachable eVTOL module, is scheduled for mass production in 2026.
Despite the recent accident, Xpeng has been making strides in the industry. The company reported having around 3,000 orders for the Land Aircraft Carrier in January. Xpeng has also expanded its operations into Europe.
The Airport Technology Excellence Awards, which celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the aviation industry, provide a platform for companies like Xpeng to showcase their achievements and elevate their industry profile. By entering these awards, companies can position themselves among top leaders driving aviation industry advancements.
In a separate incident, Xpeng recently announced a recall affecting most of its P7+ sedan models over a steering fault, which occurred days before the eVTOL incident. The company is working diligently to address this issue.
As the investigation into the accident progresses, we will keep you updated on any developments regarding Xpeng AeroHT and their eVTOL vehicles. Stay tuned for more updates.
