Compuware Predicts Olympic Website Collapse
The official website of the London 2012 Olympics, www.london2012.com, has been found to have design and performance issues by systems management software vendor Compuware in tests conducted in July.
The London 2012 website, hosted by Olympics technology partner BT, has the highest number of server requests per page (261) and spends the longest amount of time processing Javascript (3.7 seconds). This is followed by the browser having to wait before it can download content (1.9 seconds). A significant number of these server requests are for graphics and .jpegs.
Michael Allen, director of IT service management at Compuware, predicts that the website's performance will worsen as use of the site grows during the games. He believes that the loading time will significantly increase and the website may fail, particularly for visitors using tablets and smartphones.
Allen suggests that LOCOG could compress the graphical content on the London 2012 website to improve performance. However, he believes that it is too late to make major architectural changes to the website.
Despite Compuware's concerns, LOCOG has dismissed them. BT, on the other hand, is confident that the London 2012 website will cope with increased traffic. The infrastructure for the London 2012 website is robust, powerful, and scalable, according to BT.
The London 2012 website contains live information and multimedia functionality from different application and content providers. It is hosted at two BT data centres in the UK. However, it was not found in the provided search results who the responsible company for the development of the website was.
Despite these performance issues, the London 2012 website is ready to serve millions of visitors during the games. With the right optimisation strategies, it is hoped that the website will provide a smooth and enjoyable user experience for all.
