Conservative Opponent of DEI Settles Libel Claim against Meta

In a groundbreaking move, conservative social media personality Robby Starbuck and tech giant Meta have agreed to settle a defamation lawsuit. The lawsuit, which centered on political bias and artificial intelligence-driven misinformation, was originally filed by Starbuck in Delaware Superior Court in April.

The settlement aims to address concerns about artificial intelligence bias and misinformation by having Starbuck serve as a consultant to Meta. This collaboration is designed to help prevent political bias and reduce the risk of false or defamatory outputs from Meta’s AI chatbot technology.

Starbuck will work with Meta's Product Policy team to improve the accuracy of Meta AI, mitigate ideological and political bias embedded in the AI, and minimize cases where the chatbot generates made-up or misleading information about individuals.

The settlement arose after Meta’s chatbot falsely accused Starbuck of participating in the January 6 Capitol riot, causing reputational harm and business difficulties for him. Following the settlement, Meta and Starbuck jointly stated that their work aims to set an example for ethical AI practices across the industry.

However, the choice of Starbuck—known for his conservative activism and opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies—to advise on AI bias has sparked criticism, especially from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups. This is due to Meta’s recent controversial policy changes around moderation of “divisive” topics like gender and sexuality.

Despite the controversy, Starbuck is focused on ensuring the highest quality training materials are used to minimize bias in AI. He hopes that his new appointment at Meta will have industry-wide repercussions, potentially setting an example for fairness in AI training and becoming an industry standard.

Meta, on the other hand, aims to remove bias from its AI models and ensure that its large language models can understand and articulate both sides of a contentious issue. The company's large language models, known as LLMs, have historically leaned left in debated political and social topics due to the types of training data available online.

Both parties have expressed satisfaction with the terms of the settlement, with Meta and Starbuck stating that they have resolved the matter to their mutual satisfaction. In the coming months, they will work collaboratively to continue addressing issues of ideological and political bias and minimizing the risk of hallucinations in response to user queries.

This settlement marks a significant step towards ensuring fairness and accuracy in AI-driven technologies, setting an example for the entire industry to follow.
