Conservative Opposed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Resolves Defamation Claim with Meta Platform

Robby Starbuck, a well-known conservative activist, and Meta have reached a settlement in a defamation lawsuit. The lawsuit, filed in Delaware Superior Court in April, centered on political bias and artificial intelligence-driven misinformation.

According to the lawsuit, Starbuck claimed that Meta's AI chatbot, Meta AI, falsely accused him of being a "White nationalist." Meta, however, initially responded to further queries with inaccurate information, stating that Starbuck was arrested on January 6 and is currently being sued for defamation.

Meta acknowledges that its large language models, including LLMs, have historically leaned left when it comes to debated political and social topics. As part of the settlement, Starbuck will serve as a consultant to Meta's Product Policy team, focusing on ensuring that the highest quality training materials are used in AI development.

Both parties have expressed satisfaction with the settlement terms. Starbuck looks forward to continuing engagement with Meta as a voice for conservatives to ensure fair treatment by AI. Meta, on the other hand, is committed to removing bias from its AI models and ensuring that they can understand and articulate both sides of a contentious issue.

The joint statement mentions that Meta has made strides to improve the accuracy of Meta AI and mitigate ideological and political bias. Meta and Starbuck will work together to find ways to minimize the risk of AI returning inaccurate or biased information in response to user queries. They will also collaborate to continue addressing issues of ideological and political bias and minimize the risk of AI "hallucinations."

Robby Starbuck, who is not an AI researcher, has gained attention for his campaigns against LGBTQ+ inclusion and racial equity initiatives. His involvement in this collaboration has been controversial due to his history of promoting conspiracy theories and efforts undermining LGBTQ+ and trans communities.

Starbuck believes that the improvements made to AI training at Meta could become an example for the entire industry in ensuring fairness. He hopes that his new appointment at Meta will have industry-wide repercussions, potentially setting an industry standard for fair AI.
