Fired Up: Croatia's Military Industry Ready to Sizzle on Global Stage
It's a hot market out there for weapons and equipment, even in historically neutral countries. With Europe shaking off decades of demilitarization, Croatia's burgeoning military industry could be poised to make a splash, reportedly exporting almost 100 million euros worth of goods. But can this fledgling sector keep up with the competition?
Goran Basarac, the big cheese of the Croatian Defense Industry Cluster, thinks so. "We've already broken the old paradigms — can the Croatian industry compete with EU funds? Well, we've proved that back in 2016 with 550 million euros in grants for new developments. Now we've got a much beefier intervention, and guess what? Europe has followed suit because we've shown that modern industry packs a punch," he said.
He's referring to the European Defense Fund, a 7.9 billion euro pot primarily used for research and development. While some product capacities will likely be created, Croatia’s homemade goodies could find their way onto the market more and more often.
The Croatian defense industry is having its moment. Time to show the world what we've got.

Ivan Jelusic, director of Orqa, believes the key moment came in 2020 in Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan, armed with unmanned systems made in Turkey, won a military operation. "The war in Ukraine will have a significant impact on the use of unmanned systems in military operations," Jelusic said.
Jelusic explained that Orqa has focuses on producing authentically produced components for manned systems in Croatia. This attention to detail is crucial in military operations, where verifiable suppliers are key.

"Thanks to a fortuitous combination of circumstances, our company has positioned itself," Jelusic concluded.
Streamlining the local defense industry is essential for Croatia to take advantage of this international opportunity. "We must develop competitive technologies, work with international partners, and leverage the European Defense Fund," Basarac added.
