Cryptocurrency Swindle: 256 Ether Stolen Through AI-Powered Scam Exploiting Hacked YouTube Accounts for Crypto Robbery
Headline: Cybercriminals Exploit YouTube for Crypto Scams: A Warning for Shiba Inu Investors
In the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency, a new threat has emerged, as cybercriminals leverage aged and seemingly legitimate YouTube accounts to advertise fraudulent crypto trading bots. These bots, disguised as legitimate tools, actually deploy malicious smart contracts designed to steal users' funds.
These YouTube accounts demonstrate deliberate efforts to appear credible by maintaining a long history of activity and posting a mix of cryptocurrency investment tips alongside unrelated content. Some videos promoting the scam show signs of being AI-generated, with an unnatural tone and cadence of the narrator's voice cited as key indicators.
The scam works by instructing victims to deploy a smart contract code—often shared via video description links—on platforms like Remix Solidity IDE. Victims are convinced to fund the smart contract, typically with at least 0.5 ETH, under the pretext of paying gas fees and ensuring enough capital for profitable arbitrage or MEV trading strategies promoted by the bot.
However, the deployed smart contract contains obfuscated code, hiding the attacker's wallet address by techniques such as XOR obfuscation and hex conversions to prevent simple detection. When the victim funds the contract and interacts with a function, the attacker-controlled wallet is secretly authorized and is able to drain the user's funds from the contract.
Additional tactics include manipulating the YouTube comment section by deleting negative comments, using multiple different wallet addresses and "failover" contract mechanisms to make tracking and recovering stolen funds more difficult, and distributing content via unlisted videos, social media, or messaging apps like Telegram to evade detection.
This scam has led to losses of over $900,000 to $1 million worth of ETH so far, highlighting the effectiveness and scale of this social engineering combined with technical obscurity.
Users are advised to exercise extreme caution with trading tools promoted via unverified YouTube channels or social media, thoroughly review smart contract code before deploying, and distrust free bots advertised through influencer videos or unknown sources. The Shiba Inu community, committed to decentralized trust, transparency, and education, encourages its members to navigate risks and build resilience against scams.
The current scam serves as a reminder of the importance of doing your own research (DYOR) in the crypto space. The Shiba Inu community aims to reinforce the long-term strength and integrity of the ecosystem by emphasizing the importance of conducting one's own research and consulting with a qualified financial advisor before making investment decisions.
