Dagestan Uncovers Secret Crypto Mine; Leaders Propose Dedicated Power Plants
Authorities in Dagestan have uncovered a secretive coin mining operation, while regional leaders propose dedicated power plants for the energy-intensive activity, aiming to isolate it from public grids.
In a recent raid, Dagestani authorities discovered a crypto mining facility disguised as a greenhouse. The operation, housing 69 mining rigs, was allegedly misrepresented to access subsidized energy tariffs. The owner is under investigation.
Aisen Nikolaev, head of the Republic of Sakha's State Council Commission on Energy, has proposed building exclusive power plants for cryptocurrency mining. This would isolate their heavy energy use from public grids, preventing capacity shortages and declining power quality. The commission, advising the President's offices on energy policy, is considering this proposal.
Unchecked coin mining has led to excessive electricity consumption in some areas, particularly in regions with limited energy reserves. This has resulted in power shortages and poor quality for local businesses and residents. Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev has suggested redirecting surplus power in the Far East to support cryptocurrency mining.
The Republic of Tatarstan has announced plans to build a special crypto mining power plant, operating independently of the public electricity grid. This is due to the overuse of the public power supply by coin mining activities.
The discovery of the camouflaged crypto mining facility in Dagestan has raised concerns about energy consumption and misrepresentation. Proposals for dedicated power plants aim to manage the heavy energy demands of cryptocurrency mining, ensuring stability for public electricity grids. The State Council Commission on Energy is evaluating these proposals to balance the needs of the coin mining industry with those of the public.
