Defense sector AI development to be boosted by Anthropic and Department of Defense, emphasizing ethical AI use in military operations.
Anthropic Awarded $200 Million Prototype Agreement by U.S. Department of Defense
Anthropic, a leading AI company, has been awarded a two-year prototype other transaction agreement by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) with a ceiling of $200 million. This collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of responsible AI across the defense enterprise.
Thiyagu Ramasamy, Anthropic's Head of Public Sector, stated that this award marks a new chapter in Anthropic's commitment to supporting U.S. national security. The company will exchange technical insights, performance data, and operational feedback with CDAO and other DOD organizations and commands to achieve this goal.
Anthropic's AI system, Claude Gov, is already powering deployments by agencies across the national security community. These models, custom built for national security customers, are deployed on infrastructure powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The partnership with Anthropic will grant access to Claude AI for over 10,000 scientists, researchers, and staff at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). This collaboration is expected to bolster research across nuclear deterrence, energy security, and materials science at LLNL.
Recognizing the importance of reliability, interpretability, and steerability in government contexts, Anthropic is committed to building AI systems that possess these qualities. The company will work directly with the DOD to identify where frontier AI can deliver the most impact, then develop working prototypes fine-tuned on DOD data.
Anthropic will collaborate with defense experts to anticipate and mitigate potential adversarial uses of AI. The company's advanced risk forecasting capabilities will be instrumental in this endeavour.
Claude Gov models are integrated into mission workflows on classified networks with partners like Palantir. This integration enables U.S. defense and intelligence organizations to rapidly process and analyze complex data. In recent months, Anthropic has collaborated with US defense and intelligence organizations, although specific partner organizations are not explicitly named.
Anthropic believes that democracies must work together to ensure AI development strengthens democratic values globally by maintaining technological leadership to protect against authoritarian misuse. Interested organizations can contact Anthropic's public sector team to learn more about transforming their operations with Claude.
