Detmold's Flood Protection Measures Pass First Major Test
Detmold's flood protection measures have proven successful during a recent heavy thunderstorm. The storm brought rainfall significantly above the once-in-a-century heavy rain, but the town remained safe from flooding.
On June 14th, Detmold faced a severe thunderstorm that dumped between 50 and 60 millimeters of rain in just 15 minutes. Despite the deluge, the town's flood protection measures held strong. The newly installed sheet pile wall near Düner Straße, along with other measures like ditch dam systems and emergency waterways, prevented any overflow.
Engineer Andreas Hoffmann, who designed and implemented these measures, confirmed their success. Mayor Frank Hilker acknowledged the impact of climate change but attributed the successful flood protection to the implemented measures. While the fire department responded to incidents in the north of the city due to high-pressure groundwater or non-functioning backflow preventers, the core flood protection measures in Klüt and Detmold passed their first real test with flying colours.
Detmold's flood protection measures have shown their worth during a heavy thunderstorm. The town plans to further expand these measures, including tackling the emergency overflow channel on Düner Straße and building a new ditch dam system with a retention basin on Poststraße. Despite the success, Mayor Frank Hilker recognised the ongoing challenge posed by climate change.
