Detroit Country Day School Unveils Tessera-Empowered Virtual Production Studio
Detroit Country Day School Unveils State-of-the-Art Virtual Production Studio
Detroit Country Day School in Michigan has taken a significant step forward in educational technology, with the launch of a new virtual production studio. The school's innovative studio, part of a larger complex known as 'The Studios' which includes a vodcasting studio and VR lab, is equipped with cutting-edge technology that mirrors professional-level virtual production workflows.
At the heart of the studio's technical infrastructure lies Brompton Technology's Tessera LED processing platform. This system offers advanced LED video processing capabilities, including 4K resolution support, precise color shaping, and seamless integration with LED walls.
The Tessera platform in this installation utilizes a rack-mounted 4K Tessera SX40 LED video processor, powering a 26x8-foot INFiLED DBmk2 LED volume with a 1.9mm pixel pitch. This setup delivers crystal-clear 4K imagery. The colour shaping tools within the Tessera software allow for adjustment of saturation and gamma curves to match the LED wall output precisely with in-studio lighting, enhancing realism and visual coherence for xR production.
The Tessera software’s intuitive and accessible graphical interface simplifies LED wall setup for both beginners and experts. Features like On-Screen Color Adjustment (OSCA) let users quickly make seam and module corrections directly on the LED panel, improving efficiency on set.
The solutions also include two Tessera XD 10G data distribution units, ensuring reliable, high-bandwidth transmission and redundancy across the LED volume. Additional advanced features such as Frame Store, Cable Redundancy, PureTone color control, and sACN for brightness control further stabilize and enhance LED wall performance during shoots.
4Wall Entertainment served as the integration partner for the studio's technical infrastructure. Brompton Technology provided comprehensive support, including on-site calibration and training.
The virtual production studio features a RED camera with a Mo-Sys tracking system. An 11th-grade student has already used the studio's virtual production capabilities to create a documentary about the Detroit riots of the late 1960s.
The school's creative technologist, Mike Medvinsky, chose Brompton Technology due to its popularity in major concerts and video production studios. He praises the quality improvement of the LED assets after the installation. Will Jennings, senior project manager, emphasizes the system’s versatility and camera-friendly visuals.
Brompton Technology is committed to supporting educational initiatives that bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry-standard technology. The Detroit Country Day School's xR Studio is a testament to this commitment, delivering professional-grade virtual production capabilities and elevating educational opportunities with technology widely used in major concert and video production environments.
In the coming year, the school is considering adding an LED floor to take full advantage of the space's xR capabilities. This addition will further enhance the studio's versatility and potential for innovative, immersive learning experiences.
