The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to revolutionize identity verification in the country with the rollout of a new QR code-enabled e-Aadhaar system by the end of 2025. This innovative digital upgrade aims to streamline the verification process and make it more secure and efficient for the 1.3 billion Aadhaar holders in India.

The upcoming e-Aadhaar system will introduce an integrated mobile app that supports QR code verification. This means Aadhaar holders can authenticate their identity instantly through digital QR scans, eliminating the need for physical Aadhaar cards. Approximately 2,000 Aadhaar authentication devices have already been upgraded to support this new system, paving the way for a smoother identity check experience for both individuals and service providers.

Key features of the new e-Aadhaar system include the ability for users to update most of their personal information, such as name, address, and date of birth, directly through the mobile app. This digital update aims to reduce the reliance on in-person enrolment centre visits. Starting November 2025, biometric updates (fingerprint, iris scan) will still require physical visits, but all other updates can be completed digitally.

The app will also offer masked Aadhaar sharing, enabling users to control how much personal information is shared during verification. This feature ensures a higher level of privacy and security for Aadhaar holders.

The impact of this new system on identity verification is significant. By eliminating the need to carry or submit physical Aadhaar copies, the process becomes more secure, efficient, and quicker for banks, government services, and other sectors that use Aadhaar.
