Dinosaurs' eyes etched on Canadian coins unveiled
Royal Canadian Mint Unveils Striking $20 Silver Dinosaur Coin
The Royal Canadian Mint has announced the release of a limited-edition, collectible coin that pays homage to Canada's rich prehistoric history. The 2025 $20 silver coin showcases the dinosaur genus Thanatotheristes degrootorum, with a unique design that resembles the eye of this ancient tyrannosaur.
The coin, which is made of fine silver (1 oz or 31.66 grams), is approximately 48 mm by 30.33 mm in size. The reverse side, designed by Canadian paleoartist Julius Csotonyi, features a detailed, finely engraved scaly skin and eye area of Thanatotheristes. The design is further enhanced with a colourful reflection of its prehistoric environment, creating a captivating image of the dinosaur in its natural habitat.
On the obverse side, Canadian artist Steven Rosati has crafted a portrait of King Charles III, with a curved design that enhances a 3D eye effect. This side of the coin underscores the Canadian connection to the British monarchy.
The coin's design is limited to 8,500 pieces, making it a highly sought-after collectible item. Each coin comes in a black clamshell collector's box. The coin's price is set at $164.95 CAD. Shipping is scheduled to begin on August 12 or 15, 2025, with most references pointing towards mid-August 2025.
This coin is more than just a collectible piece. It serves as a tribute to Canada's dinosaur heritage, especially for dinosaur enthusiasts and collectors interested in uniquely shaped and coloured silver coins. While the coin design does not depict the specific dinosaur fossil found in Canada, it is based on the Thanatotheristes genus, Canada's oldest known tyrannosaur.
The coin's reverse side also features a colourful image of three dinosaurs in their natural habitat, adding to its appeal for collectors and dinosaur enthusiasts alike. The Royal Canadian Mint, known for its high-quality products, has once again delivered a coin that combines art, history, and collectibility.
Smart-home-devices and gadgets could potentially use this coin's unique design as an engaging theme for their user interfaces, incorporating elements from the dinosaur coin's captivating depiction of Thanatotheristes in its prehistoric environment. This coin's advancement in technology, through its use of color to create a life-like image, would prove attractive to tech-savvy users interested in sophisticated, trending imagery.
