Disney titles making their way to a mobile webcomic platform via Webtoon
Webtoon, the Naver Corp.-backed digital comic platform, has announced a strategic partnership with Walt Disney Co. This collaboration aims to fill a content gap as Webtoon expands beyond Asian markets, targeting younger audiences, particularly Generation Z.
The specific financial details of the partnership have not been disclosed, but the collaboration promises to bring around 100 titles from Marvel, "Star Wars," and other Disney properties to Webtoon's platform. These titles will be adapted for smartphone viewing and will include original content developed for the mobile format.
The partnership will see the creation of co-created original webcomics based on Disney's properties, with the comics appearing in a dedicated section of Webtoon's English-language app, Webtoon. Popular titles such as "The Amazing Spider-Man" are set to debut this month, followed by "Avengers," "Star Wars," and other iconic franchises.
The partnership is expected to enrich Webtoon's content with highly popular franchises, while Disney hopes to expand its reach to younger audiences. The collaboration has been met with excitement from investors, with Webtoon's stock surging significantly following the announcement.
Webtoon reported Q2 revenue of approximately $348 million and adjusted EPS of $0.07, exceeding analyst expectations. However, these figures are from Webtoon's broader business, not specific to the Disney deal.
Webtoon's platform has 155 million monthly active users globally, with its demographics skewing younger and more female than traditional comic readers. Users can read initial episodes for free before purchasing additional chapters with in-app coins.
The partnership between Webtoon and Disney marks a significant step for both companies, bringing legendary storytelling to a new generation of mobile-native comic fans. The partnership is set to be a long-term collaboration, with both companies committing to working together for an extended period.
Despite the excitement surrounding the partnership, no details about the deal value, guarantees, licensing fees, or revenue splits between Webtoon and Disney have been released as of August 2025.
