Vast and vivid e-Paper displays, notably displayed at the recent Touch Taiwan event, are gaining prominence. Witness the unveiling of the 88-inch, multi-colored e-Paper screen by Yuantai, a novel exhibit at the event. However, it's important to note that this display isn't a single, continuous screen, but rather made up of halves.

Large, Colorful e-Paper Displays Are Here and They're Booming

E-paper display of significant dimensions steals the spotlight at Touch Taiwan 2024 event

The Touch Taiwan event this year has been a spectacular showcase of emerging display technologies, with e-Paper displays taking center stage. Yuan Tai, a major player in this space, demonstrated a whopping 88-inch color e-Paper display, a first in the industry. This impressive behemoth wasn't a single continuous display, instead, it was built from six 31.5-inch E Ink Spectra 6 displays that boasted razor-thin 2mm bezels. In essence, it appeared as a single, seamless 88-inch display.

Joining the party were two more large-format e-Paper displays, a 61-inch outdoor signage and a 72-inch banner signage, both based on the Kaleido 3 color e-Paper display technology. These displays are perfect for retail advertising or even as traffic lights. Yuan Tai currently has four color e-Paper products in production including the Kaleido 3 and Spectra color e-Paper.

However, Yuan Tai faces a couple of challenges. The first one is improving yield to keep up with the anticipated growing demand for large-sized color e-Paper displays. The second challenge is to establish a robust supply chain to cater to the large-sized display segment, as the supply chain for small e-Paper displays, which has already reached maturity, lacks such robustness in the large-sized display segment. With over 100 small-size e-Paper module production lines, production capacity starts at 500K per month.

Yuan Tai is optimistic that the completion of its Hsinchu factory office building will help achieve a higher yield of large e-Paper displays, meeting future demand for large-sized e-Paper displays.
