East Asian Automobile Manufacturer Awards Turbocharger Contract to BorgWarner for Hybrid Vehicles

BorgWarner, a leading provider of boosting technology, has secured a significant contract with a major East Asian Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to supply wastegate turbochargers for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) SUV applications in Korea.

The contract win reinforces BorgWarner's position as a leading provider of boosting technology for hybrid powertrains. The latest wastegate turbocharger technology from BorgWarner offers precise boost control, thermal durability up to 1050°C, fast response times, and high power density. These characteristics enhance engine performance, improve fuel economy, and reduce emissions in hybrid powertrains.

The turbochargers are designed to support small-displacement gasoline engines ranging from 0.9 to 3.0 liters, with flexible turbine designs (single-scroll, twin-scroll, dual volute) optimized for noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) reduction. The turbochargers are electrically actuated to manage excess engine energy effectively, enabling rapid acceleration (up to 450 horsepower and 460 lb-ft torque), lightweight design, and exceptional reliability.

The wastegate turbocharger system features a robust actuator and optimized wastegate valve design, ensuring precise boost control across a wide range of engine loads and driving conditions. This results in faster transient response, smoother acceleration, and improved drivability.

BorgWarner's Pyongtaek facility in Korea will provide localized support and supply chain efficiency for the regional market. Production of the turbocharger will begin in 2027 at BorgWarner's Pyongtaek facility.

In addition to the performance benefits, the technology offers cost-effectiveness and durability, supporting long-term combustion engine supply with localized manufacturing in strategic locations like Poland, Mexico, and China. The technology also supports hybrid SUV and sports car platforms, facilitating the transition to electrification while maintaining high performance.

The contract win underscores BorgWarner's commitment to delivering high-performance, efficient turbocharging solutions for hybrid powertrains. Dr. Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc., stated, "The award underscores our commitment to delivering high-performance, efficient turbocharging solutions for hybrid powertrains."

This latest contract is a continuation of an 18-year partnership between BorgWarner and the East Asian OEM. The long-term partnership and contract awards reinforce BorgWarner's position as a key supplier enabling hybrid performance vehicle advancements, with production start planned around 2027-2028.

In summary, BorgWarner’s wastegate turbocharger technology combines robust mechanical design, advanced materials, and smart actuation to optimize hybrid vehicle propulsion by delivering efficient, reliable, and performance-enhancing boosting solutions tailored for next-generation hybrid applications under major OEM collaborations.
