Siaya County, situated in western Kenya, is among three counties being considered to host a potential nuclear power plant. The other two counties under consideration are Kwale and Kilifi.

The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) is currently assessing eight sites in Siaya County for the proposed nuclear power plant. These sites are Ugambe, Sirongo, Tiunda, Manyuanda, Osindo, Nyangoye, Dagamoyo, and Kanyawayaga. All eight sites are located along or near the Lake Victoria shoreline.

NuPEA's Director of Communications, Patricia Ndede, recently stated that they are in Siaya County for two weeks to gather scientific data and rank the sites. The engineering study, or site characterisation, for the two shortlisted sites is expected to take two years.

Eric Ohaga, NuPEA's Director of Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Development, mentioned that they will settle on one preferred site and an alternative one after analyzing the scientific data. County Commissioner Robert Ngetich urges residents to embrace the nuclear power plant project, emphasizing that measures are in place to mitigate the risks associated with its establishment.

Kenya is pursuing nuclear energy as part of its long-term strategy to diversify electricity generation and reduce reliance on hydro and thermal power. If successful, Siaya would become the first county in Kenya to host a nuclear power facility. The first nuclear power plant in Siaya County is planned to be switched on by 2034.

By the end of October, NuPEA will have completed the ranking of the sites and conducted a preliminary environmental assessment. The construction of the nuclear power plant in Siaya County is planned to commence after the suitability study of the two shortlisted sites.

It is not yet publicly specified who will initiate the realization of the nuclear power plant if the project is successful. However, NuPEA is working diligently to ensure that the best possible site is chosen for this groundbreaking project.
