Election results in the local area faced interruptions due to the server becoming overwhelmed.

In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the municipal elections in Münster were marred by technical issues on election night. The problems arose between 6 PM and 9:30 PM, causing delays in accessing the election results online.

The municipal IT service provider, citeq, immediately sprang into action, implementing measures such as doubling server capacities and making technical adjustments to speed up the online access of election results. Despite these efforts and the significant increase in server capacities prior to the event, aimed at handling ten times the number of web page accesses compared to the last federal election, the systems struggled to cope with the extremely high data load on election night.

Initial suspicions of a possible cyber attack were quickly dismissed following investigations involving the criminal police. Instead, it appears that the system overload was due to the high access loads on the election results page.

Interestingly, similar problems were encountered in the display of election results in other municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the StädteRegion Aachen's Vote-Manager software was used, just as it was in Münster. This software was used in 70 other municipalities in the region to present the election results.

With the initial hurdles overcome, a noticeable improvement was not felt until 9 PM, when the number of page accesses started to decrease.

Further investigations are planned to clarify the exact technical circumstances that caused the delays in accessing the election results on election night. The aim is to ensure such issues do not recur in future elections.
